Students

For students wishing to study in Canada, in addition to an entry visa, they must obtain a study permit, covering the duration of the study program.

To apply for a study permit, you need a letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution (DLI). A DLI is a school approved by a provincial or territorial government to host international students.

The study permit is not a visa. It does not allow you to enter Canada. You may also need a visitor visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). When the permit is approved by the Canadian government, this document is issued with the study permit.

Under the Canada-Quebec Accord, Quebec selects foreign students by issuing a Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) for studies. Once this is done, the Canadian government proceeds with the statutory formalities, any other verification deemed appropriate to the issuance of a study permit.
