Refugees

Canada has signed and ratified all conventions on displaced persons and refugees, in particular the 1951 Geneva Convention and the associated protocols. The provisions of these conventions and protocols are an integral part of Canadian immigration law.

The protection of Canada for refugees can be claimed abroad or, as the case may be, in Canada. Refugee status (status of a person who has received Canadian protection) allows, over time, to obtain permanent residence and Canadian citizenship.
